When I think about the meaning of community, I envision strong roots, steady growth and the promise of what’s possible. Just as the hills, forests and fields surround us with beauty and inspiration, I see that same potential in how this community can continue to embrace its children and youth with hope and care.
In a world that can oftentimes be unfair and unkind, communities play an important role in protecting, nurturing and celebrating young people. In Douglas County, we have a strong foundation to build on. As a school district, we are proud to work alongside local partners to expand opportunities for students to learn, thrive and grow into healthy, contributing citizens.
That work takes many forms. Through our partnership with the Department of Human Services and the Douglas Education Service District, we support some of our most vulnerable students through the Horizons foster education program. Volunteers with SMART Reading help our youngest learners build a foundation in literacy. And through strong collaboration between Roseburg High School, Umpqua Community College and local industry leaders, students have access to certifications, training and degrees that lead directly to family-supporting careers.
Every student who walks through our doors has the ability to succeed and achieve. Our role as a school district is to help ignite their passion for learning. When that work is reinforced by the broader community, the impact is even greater.
From theater performances and athletics to mock trials and career training, students are exploring their interests and discovering what inspires them. Many of these opportunities exist because of the generosity of local donors, volunteers and organizations committed to the next generation.
At times, it can be easy to lose sight of these everyday successes. Social media and headlines often highlight only part of the story. The fuller picture is one of thousands of students learning, growing and achieving each day, supported by a community that believes in them.
As part of our commitment to connecting students with our community and amplifying their voices, we have relaunched Your CUE, a radio and podcast program focused on Celebrating, Uplifting, and Educating Douglas County. We are also expanding how we share the stories of what’s happening in our schools, with our printed quarterly newsletter, The Current, arriving in mailboxes this week.
Together, these efforts are creating opportunities for students to engage with our community, share their perspectives, and be part of the growth happening across Douglas County. By placing students at the center, we are bringing our community together to inspire and shape a shared vision for an abundant future.
Thank you for your continued support of Roseburg Schools. Our students and community are stronger because of you.
Sincerely,
Jared Cordon
