Native Culture Club

The school has recently added another club to a list of the extracurricular options that Roseburg high school offers. The club had its first meeting on Friday, Jan. 30 in the media center in the library, where it was led by Taher Christensen, who is the Tribal Attendance Promising Practices Advocate for Roseburg Public School District. The Green Team club attended the meeting, as well as several other students. You do not have be Native American to join or come to a meeting.
Jay Rifenbery showed up to the meeting because she really likes learning about Native American culture, and was excited at the opportunity. She said she enjoyed it “very much so; I made a cool bracelet.” She added she learned a lot and is excited at the possibility of returning.
There were several things discussed at the meeting, including what was planned for future meetings, the lives and cultures of attendees, and craft ideas. There will be more meetings in the future, and people are encouraged to come to meet Native students, learn about Native American culture, and have fun!
There was a family meeting on February 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with food and information about the club and others like it, and a raffle. This meeting was exclusively for Native American students and their families. Attendees were offered Indian tacos and got the chance to enter in a raffle to win cultural related prizes. After Ms. Christensen explained some things about her position, the club and its future, and other ideas she had for it, families were encouraged to ask questions.
If you are interested in Native Culture try coming to a club meeting or the lunch bunch meetings held on Tuesdays in the media center. Everyone is welcome, and we hope to see you there!
